Pit-a-pat, a Bontoc Igorot youth hailing from the indigenous peoples of Northern Philippines, was taken into the custody of American colonizers, who sought to impart the cultural and educational tenets of the Catholic faith. Upon his eventual return to his village, Pit-a-pat was observed to have undergone a profound transformation, both sartorially and attitudinally. Clad in a Western-style suit and exhibiting a markedly “worldly” demeanour, Pit-a-pat’s assimilation into the dominant colonial ideology serves as a poignant illustration of the impact of cultural imperialism on the cultural identities of subjugated peoples.
