St. Katharine Drexel (November 26, 1858 – March 3, 1955) was an American Catholic nun and philanthropist who dedicated her life to serving Native Americans and African Americans. She was born into a wealthy Philadelphia family, with her father being a successful banker and philanthropist.
Mother Katharine, as she came to be known, used her resources to establish schools, missions, and other charitable institutions across the country. Under her leadership, her order opened more than 60 schools, including Xavier University in New Orleans, the first Catholic university in the United States for African Americans. Additionally, she founded schools and missions on Indian reservations, providing education and support to indigenous communities.
